Bradbury Park

Themed around the idea of the ‘Biological City’, Bradbury Park Playscape is a fully custom designed playground in Brisbane’s inner north. CUSP worked in collaboration with AMAO Architects, Playworks and EPOCA to develop the design.

The final design incorporates the themes of biomimicry; “home” and connectivity through site integration; form and materiality. It also uses a layered approach to include a “subterranean” level through “ground” to a “arboreal” or tree tops level, offering opportunity for continuous play in both vertical as well as horizontal movements.

Siting of the playscape was carefully considered to ensure access; setting and character of the outcome, integrated with the mature existing vegetation and the inherent topography. The design pushes for integrated play and risk in play, as much as being an iconic and organic landmark, at the centre of the surrounding new picnic/BBQ areas.

The play-structure itself is a series of large chambers (hollows) interconnected with a multitude of diverse “infinity loops”, all focused on providing a degree of random and free form play.

Steep mounding: terraced slopes and sloped banks reinforced with vertical timber battens, anchor the structure, whilst extending “loops” and play opportunities into the landscape.
